Reel Kids

Reel Kids is FAAAF’s youth filmmaking program that gives young people the confidence, tools, and creative space to tell their stories. Students learn filmmaking from the ground up through hands-on experiences, supportive instruction, and opportunities to discover their own artistic voice.

Why Reel Kids Matter

Young people deserve a place where their creativity can grow and where their voices are heard. Reel Kids creates that space. By introducing students to filmmaking, we help them express themselves, build confidence, and learn skills that carry far beyond the classroom.

The program makes arts education accessible for Black and BIPOC youth who often have limited opportunities for training and creative development. Through storytelling, teamwork, and hands-on learning, participants develop leadership, curiosity, and pride in their work.

Program Components

Summer Film Camp

A multi-week summer experience where students learn filmmaking from start to finish. Past participants have produced short films, practiced new technical skills, and screened their work for family and friends.

Workshops and Creative Labs

Seasonal workshops introduce writing, directing, camera work, and editing in a fun and accessible format.

Student Film Showcase

Each year, students present their work at a community screening that celebrates their creativity and growth.

Program Impact

Reel Kids has served more than 100 youth across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Students learn filmmaking fundamentals, gain hands-on experience, and develop leadership and communication skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Each summer, Reel Kids produces an original short film created entirely by participating students. Recent projects include "Jackie's Journey," a story developed, filmed, and edited by the students themselves.
